The short answer

By where you listen: at a desk, beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x or Sony MDR-7506; on a PS5, PlayStation PULSE Elite; on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or a PC with one cable, Logitech G Astro A10 Gen 2; on a phone, Switch or Steam Deck, HyperX Cloud Earbuds II.

At a desk, choose closed-back wired headphones and plug them into the headphone output of your microphone, interface or mixer. You hear yourself with no delay, and the closed earcups, the design beyerdynamic recommends beside a microphone, keep what you hear from reaching it. Then run the headphone test before you go live.

Closed-back studio headphones

Wired, with no microphone: each plugs into the headphone output of your microphone, interface or mixer.

  • beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO: sold in 32, 80 and 250 ohm versions, each with its own cable. Choose the version before you buy.
  • Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: 38 ohms, three detachable cables, a 3.5 mm plug with a screw-on 6.3 mm adapter, and earcups that swivel 90° for listening with one ear.
  • Sony MDR-7506: folds for storage, with an adaptor for both 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm sockets. It has no active noise cancelling: the closed earcups do the isolating.

On a PS5

PlayStation PULSE Elite is wireless only: the PlayStation Link adapter in the box connects it to a PS5, PC or Mac, and Bluetooth to a phone. Its microphone retracts, and the battery lasts up to 30 hours, so keep it charged before a long stream. To get party chat onto the stream as well, see console party chat routing.

A wired headset for consoles and PC

Logitech G Astro A10 Gen 2 puts closed-back 32 mm drivers and a boom microphone on one 3.5 mm headset plug, which Logitech G lists for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, PC and Mac. Flip the microphone up and it mutes. A PC with separate headphone and microphone sockets takes the splitter cable in the box. Logitech G prints no figures for the 6 mm microphone, so record a few seconds in the microphone test before it carries your stream.

A phone, Switch or Steam Deck

HyperX Cloud Earbuds II carry sound and microphone on one 3.5 mm headset plug. A computer with separate headphone and microphone sockets needs a splitter, which HyperX doesn’t put in the box.

Where to plug them in

The headphone output on your microphone, interface or mixer lets you hear your voice as you speak. Turn off any second copy of your voice in software, or you hear yourself twice. Monitor streaming audio without echo walks through it, and no sound in your headphones covers a silent pair. All five are on the headphones for streaming page, with what else each one needs.

Test them before you go live

The headphone test plays the left and right channels in turn and checks whether you hear yourself twice. Set the volume there, at a level you can keep for the whole stream.
