Two ways to stream an Xbox Series X|S

The simplest way is from the console itself, to Twitch. Open the guide, go to Capture and Share and select Live streaming; after you link your Twitch account, Go live now starts the stream. No computer is involved.

The other way runs the stream from a computer. The Xbox goes into a capture card, and OBS adds your own scenes, overlays, webcam and microphone, and can send the stream to any platform. Start with the console’s own streaming; move to a capture card when you want more than it offers.

Stream straight from the Xbox

Xbox’s built-in streaming goes to Twitch and works on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, for games downloaded to the console.

  • Press the Xbox button to open the guide, go to Capture and Share and select Live streaming.
  • Link your Twitch account: scan the QR code with your phone, or open the address shown on a computer or phone.
  • Plug in your headset and webcam, set the stream title, and in the options adjust game and mic levels, party chat, resolution and bitrate.
  • Select Go live now.

Swap games during the stream and the Xbox shows a pause screen while you are out of a game, then updates the game shown on Twitch. For your own scenes, another platform or a camera through OBS, use the capture card route below.

Stream through a capture card: connect game, display and computer

Connect the console’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI IN. Connect HDMI OUT to your play display if the card provides passthrough, then connect USB data to the streaming computer. Select the card as a Video Capture Device in OBS.

Use a mode listed for both capture and passthrough on your exact card. A high-refresh display mode does not imply that OBS records at the same rate. The capture card setup guide covers the OBS source and audio steps.

Send party chat to HDMI

In Xbox Settings, open General → Volume & audio output. Set Party chat output to Headset & Speakers so party voices can reach the HDMI capture path while you hear them in your headset.

This setting covers party chat only. Elgato notes that the Xbox sends game chat and lobby chat only to the connected headset, so to capture those you need a mix-amp or similar headset device with its own audio output, or a wired headset with a chat-capture cable such as Elgato Chat Link. Connect your own commentary microphone to OBS and check it separately. If the game reaches OBS and the party’s voices still don’t, party chat not captured in OBS goes through the rest.

Check the received stream

Record game movement, game sound and your voice, then play the file back. Check the audience’s preview separately from your headset. If chat is part of the stream, ask someone in the party to speak during the recording.

Load the console setup builder with the hardware you already have. Finish with the stream checklist; a supported connector is only the start of a working route.

Load this setup and swap your gear

Load an editable example with Game Capture Neo, Wave Neo microphone and Facecam Neo webcam in the setup builder. These are starting choices, not a purchase list. Swap a device in Your gear and check the new connection requirements.

Settings for the platform you stream to

Once it is wired, each platform’s own figures for bitrate, keyframes and audio, with the date we checked them: Twitch · YouTube Live · Kick · Facebook Live · TikTok LIVE. The bitrate calculator gives the number to type into OBS for your output.

Going live for the first time? Follow the steps to stream on Twitch, go live on YouTube, stream on Kick, go live on Facebook or go LIVE on TikTok, from the account to ending the stream.
