Make the decision from the signal path
A capture card is a bridge between an external HDMI source and the streaming host. Select it from two separate requirements: what the host must capture and what the local display must receive through passthrough.
Keep passthrough and capture ceilings separate. Use a mode that appears in the exact product matrix instead of combining the largest advertised resolution, refresh rate and HDR labels.
Eight decision factors
Check these in order. Source and Capture mode decide whether the route works; the remaining factors refine operation and convenience.
- Source: Identify console, second PC or camera output and whether the signal is unencrypted HDMI.
- Capture mode: Write the resolution, frame rate and SDR/HDR format the host must receive.
- Passthrough: Write display resolution, refresh, HDR and VRR separately.
- Host connection: Choose PCIe x4 for a compatible Windows desktop or the required USB mode for external capture.
- Operating system: Check exact device and mode support on Windows, macOS or iPadOS.
- Audio: Confirm whether HDMI audio, analog input or software routing carries each required source.
- Latency/monitoring: Use display passthrough for play where appropriate and monitor creator audio from its intended output.
- Cable path: Both HDMI legs and the supplied/qualified host cable must support the route.
Constraints that change the answer
Start with HDCP. The conditions below can change the choice or the next troubleshooting branch.
- HDCP: Protected HDMI content is not a capturable input.
- Matrix combinations: Capture and passthrough maxima often describe different rows.
- USB speed: 4K X needs 10 Gbps for full modes; a 5 Gbps link reduces available options.
- PCIe fit: 4K Pro is Windows-only and requires PCIe x4; it does not fit a laptop.
- Camera use: Cam Link 4K has no display passthrough and still requires a clean, continuously powered camera feed.
A practical connection and configuration workflow
Follow the steps in order. Confirm the hardware in the operating system before selecting it in OBS or another routing application, and change one cable, mode or route at a time.
- Step 1: Record source output and display requirements.
- Step 2: Select a candidate whose passthrough row covers the display path.
- Step 3: Check its capture row for the OBS/recording requirement.
- Step 4: Verify host OS, direct USB speed or PCIe slot.
- Step 5: Connect source → input, output → display, host interface → streaming computer, then add audio once.
Before you buy
Map source output → capture input → host port in the setup builder. Include the required HDMI and USB cables and check the exact capture and passthrough rows for the mode you will use.
- Exact maker, model, generation and product label.
- Host operating system, application and physical port used.
- Required signal mode and each sending/receiving endpoint.
- Included and separately required cables, power and mounts.
- Known limitation, unresolved fact and the test that will resolve it.
Examples
Game Capture Neo can pass a published 4K60 HDR display signal while its capture path is 1080p60 SDR. That can be a correct console route when streaming 1080p60.
Game Capture 4K Pro fits a compatible Windows desktop with PCIe x4. An external 4K X or other USB card serves a different physical host requirement, with its own USB mode limits.
Use capture-card comparison and camera capture checker for the adjacent checks.
Four common failure modes
Match the symptom below first, then change one variable at a time and make a short local recording before changing the destination.
- Black screen: Check power, selected input, cable direction and HDCP before changing OBS settings.
- Display works but capture is lower: Read the capture row; passthrough does not establish captured resolution.
- High mode unavailable: Verify host USB/PCIe path, OS and exact format combination.
- Audio doubled or absent: Choose one HDMI audio capture path and disable duplicates or incorrect defaults.
Prove the result
Connect source → capture input → host, with passthrough only when the device provides it. Confirm the capture device by exact name in the operating system and OBS and make a local recording.
Start with a conservative supported mode. Add resolution, refresh rate and HDR one at a time; if passthrough and recording fail at different points, return to the highest combination both paths support.
Equipment for these connections
Start with the needed role. Check the complete profile before adding a product to your setup.
Play at 4K60 while streaming a 1080p60 source
Elgato Game Capture Neo
Use its HDMI output for a 4K60 HDR gaming display and its USB output for up to 1080p60 capture. Choose another card if the recorded stream must be 4K.

Elgato Game Capture 4K S
Select a listed capture mode and a separate listed display mode. If HDR or high refresh is essential, match both exact modes before choosing this card.

Elgato Game Capture 4K X
Use a 10 Gbps USB connection for the full mode set. On a 5 Gbps port, choose one of the reduced capture modes or a different host connection before buying for high resolution.
