Make the decision from the signal path
Choose a webcam when a direct UVC connection, compact mount and simple continuous computer feed solve the shot. Choose a separate camera only when its lens, sensor, framing or production role justifies HDMI/UVC verification, continuous power and an added capture path.
USB charging or file transfer does not make a camera a live UVC webcam. Use HDMI only when the exact model can provide clean output continuously through the intended capture path.
Eight decision factors
Check these in order. Connection path and Shot requirement decide whether the route works; the remaining factors refine operation and convenience.
- Connection path: A webcam normally exposes UVC video directly; an HDMI camera needs a compatible capture input and data route to the host.
- Shot requirement: Define framing, movement, focus and crop room before comparing resolution labels.
- Runtime: Verify continuous live output, heat behavior and external power for the intended session length.
- Host bandwidth: Match the selected video mode to a real direct USB protocol, especially for 4K sources.
- Mounting: Check eye line, working distance, thread/clip fit, cable strain and any gimbal clearance.
- Controls: Separate basic video availability from maker software effects that may be OS-specific.
- Audio: Plan a separate close microphone; a camera microphone is usually the wrong distance for a desk voice path.
- Expansion cost: Count capture device, correct HDMI cable, power adapter and mount as part of the camera route.
Constraints that change the answer
Start with Clean output. The conditions below can change the choice or the next troubleshooting branch.
- Clean output: An HDMI feed must omit menus and focus boxes for a clean program source.
- Continuous power: A battery-oriented camera needs a supported long-session power solution.
- Capture ceiling: Cam Link 4K captures up to its published SDR mode and has no display passthrough.
- USB mode: USB-C shape does not establish UVC or high-speed operation.
- Application support: Confirm the exact camera/capture device appears in OBS on the host OS.
A practical connection and configuration workflow
Follow the steps in order. Confirm the hardware in the operating system before selecting it in OBS or another routing application, and change one cable, mode or route at a time.
- Step 1: Write the required shot: fixed seated, moving presenter, overhead, crop-heavy or multi-camera.
- Step 2: For a webcam, connect it directly and confirm the exact UVC mode in OBS.
- Step 3: For HDMI, prove clean output and continuous power before adding the capture device.
- Step 4: Set light, distance and framing before selecting the final resolution.
- Step 5: Record the intended duration and inspect focus, exposure continuity, sync and disconnects.
Before you buy
Map the complete camera path in the setup builder: source output, capture or USB input, host port, software source, power and mount. Price the complete path, not the camera body alone.
- Exact maker, model, generation and product label.
- Host operating system, application and physical port used.
- Required signal mode and each sending/receiving endpoint.
- Included and separately required cables, power and mounts.
- Known limitation, unresolved fact and the test that will resolve it.
Examples
A fixed 1080p talking-head scene often needs a well-placed webcam and controlled light more than a separate camera system. That route is easy to reconnect and removes HDMI capture from the desk.
An overhead craft view or interchangeable-lens shot may justify HDMI capture, but only after the exact camera passes clean-output, continuous-power and runtime checks.
Use camera capture checker and lighting guide for the adjacent checks.
Four common failure modes
Match the symptom below first, then change one variable at a time and make a short local recording before changing the destination.
- Camera charges but has no video: Check whether the model supports UVC live video; charging and file transfer are different functions.
- HDMI includes overlays: Enable a clean-output mode if the exact model supports one, or the route is unsuitable.
- Feed stops during session: Inspect power, sleep and heat limits with a full-duration test.
- 4K option missing: Confirm both device mode and host USB speed; use a supported lower mode rather than inferring capability.
Prove the result
Connect the chosen path to the intended host, select the exact video mode in OBS and record for the full session length with the normal lights and applications running.
Cold-start the rig once. If clean HDMI, continuous power or the required host mode remains unproved, keep the camera route conditional and use a supported webcam path as the fallback.

A direct USB camera for everyday streaming
Elgato Facecam Neo
Its fixed USB-C lead needs a data adapter on a USB-A computer. Select 1080p60 MJPG in OBS before judging motion.

Elgato Facecam MK.2
Its fixed focus suits a consistent speaking position. Place the camera within the published focus range; choose autofocus if you regularly lean far forward or show objects close to the lens.

Elgato Facecam 4K
Connect it through USB 3 for the full video path, then select the exact mode in OBS. A USB 2 connection exposes fewer modes, even with a Type-C plug.

Logitech MX Brio
Set the desired framing and exposure in the camera software, then test that view in OBS before relying on automatic reframing.

Insta360 Link 2
Leave clearance for the motorized camera to turn and use a stable mount. Choose the fixed Link 2C body if you only need a stationary seated frame.

Elgato Cam Link 4K
There is no HDMI display output. Identify the unit’s revision before planning 4K frame rates, then test clean HDMI and continuous camera power; use a passthrough card for a separate gaming display.
