Make the decision from the signal path
Start with one controllable light near camera axis, slightly above eye level and close enough to soften the face without entering frame. Add fill or background light only to solve a visible problem after camera exposure and white balance are stable.
Published output figures do not predict the picture at your working distance or with your room surfaces. Place and adjust the light at the real desk before adding fixtures.
Eight decision factors
Check these in order. Shot size and Distance decide whether the route works; the remaining factors refine operation and convenience.
- Shot size: A tight seated crop and a standing two-person frame need different coverage.
- Distance: Moving a light closer changes apparent size and required output.
- Angle: Near-axis placement reduces harsh cross-face shadow; lateral movement adds shape.
- Height: Place slightly above eye level while preserving catchlights and avoiding glasses glare.
- Room light: Control windows and mixed-color fixtures before adding more power.
- Mount: Check desk clamp, floor footprint, monitor clearance and stand stability.
- Power: Match the supplied input; USB-powered output can depend on the power source.
- Control: Confirm physical/app control and whether the network/software path fits the room.
Constraints that change the answer
Start with Flicker. The conditions below can change the choice or the next troubleshooting branch.
- Flicker: Camera shutter/frame rate and light/control behavior must be tested together.
- Glasses: Reflection angle can require moving light or camera rather than lowering exposure.
- USB power: Key Light Neo output depends on the source; a host port may not supply every level.
- Generation: Do not use first-generation Key Light Air dimensions or mounts for MK.2.
- Desk safety: Clamp clearance, cable strain and heat/power placement are hard constraints.
A practical connection and configuration workflow
Follow the steps in order. Confirm the hardware in the operating system before selecting it in OBS or another routing application, and change one cable, mode or route at a time.
- Step 1: Set the final camera framing.
- Step 2: Turn off uncontrolled mixed lights and note daylight changes.
- Step 3: Place one light near camera axis and above eye line.
- Step 4: Adjust distance, angle, intensity and color while watching skin and background separately.
- Step 5: Record motion and glasses/head turns before adding fill or background light.
Before you add a light
Mark the presenter, camera, desk edges and available light positions. Add a fixture only when the current layout cannot produce the needed exposure and separation without glare or entering the shot.
- Exact maker, model, generation and product label.
- Host operating system, application and physical port used.
- Required signal mode and each sending/receiving endpoint.
- Included and separately required cables, power and mounts.
- Known limitation, unresolved fact and the test that will resolve it.
Examples
A compact seated desk may fit Key Light Neo beside the camera if its power source and output are sufficient. Mount and power checks matter as much as panel size.
A wider two-person frame may favor a larger or more distant source, with a second light only when one face or background remains outside the usable coverage.

Four common failure modes
Match the symptom below first, then change one variable at a time and make a short local recording before changing the destination.
- Face is noisy/dim: Move the light closer and expose for the face before increasing camera resolution.
- Glasses reflect panel: Raise or move the light laterally while preserving face coverage.
- Light output changes: Check the power source and cable, especially with USB-powered models.
- Two faces expose differently: Reposition subjects/light or add a purpose-specific fill instead of splitting the difference poorly.
Prove the result
Set the camera and presenter first, then place the key light at the real working distance. Check face exposure, glasses glare, background separation and whether stands or cables enter the shot.
Record a representative movement and screen-use sequence. Save the fixture positions and settings only after the image remains usable through the normal session.
