The short answer

By how many people talk: one voice with a fader for each app on Windows, TC-Helicon GoXLR MINI; two people in the room, RØDECaster Duo or Elgato Wave XLR Pro; up to four, RØDECaster Pro II. For cameras and consoles rather than voices, Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro or RØDE Streamer X.

A mixer earns its place when you want faders under your hand, more than one headphone mix, or a remote guest who must not hear their own voice. For one voice into OBS, an audio interface does the job: audio interface vs mixer settles which you need. Then choose by how many people talk at once.

One voice, with a fader for each app

TC-Helicon GoXLR MINI takes one XLR microphone and gives you four faders, and in Windows each app can get its own fader. It is Windows only: TC-Helicon states no macOS support. Its phantom power is +24 V, not 48 V, so check what a condenser microphone needs before you pair them.

Two people in the room

Each voice needs its own input and gain, and each person their own headphones.

  • RØDECaster Duo: two combo inputs for microphones, four faders, two headphone outputs, and a mix-minus return on both of its USB interfaces for a remote guest.
  • Elgato Wave XLR Pro: two XLR voices and two headphone mixes in a compact box. Its second USB socket is for another device, and you set what each one hears separately.

Up to four voices

RØDECaster Pro II has four combo inputs and four headphone outputs, and each USB interface offers a mix-minus return. It runs from its own 30 W USB-C power adaptor, not from the computer, so place it near a socket.

A remote guest

Your guest has to hear you and everyone else, but not their own voice coming back. That return is called mix-minus. The RØDECaster Duo, RØDECaster Pro II and RØDE Streamer X list it; with an interface, routing software has to build it. Loopback and mix-minus explains both, and remote guest hears their own voice echo fixes it when it goes wrong.

Cameras and consoles rather than voices

Two boxes are sold as mixers but solve a video problem first.

  • Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro: switches between up to four HDMI cameras or consoles. It has no XLR microphone preamps, so an XLR microphone still needs an interface, and its USB webcam output is HD.
  • RØDE Streamer X: HDMI capture and a microphone input in one box. Set up its audio returns so HDMI sound and the computer’s sound don’t reach OBS twice.

Side by side

Streaming mixers and production consoles compared lines up their inputs, outputs, loopback and mix-minus. The audio routing builder then shows what your stream, your headphones and a guest each hear.

Rehearse before the first show

Set the stream, headphone and guest mixes, then record a short call with your guest and listen back to each one. Check every voice in the microphone test first, so each reaches the yellow on OBS’s meter without clipping.
