Make the decision from the signal path
An interface is enough when its input and output count plus software routing cover the production. A mixer earns its complexity when you need several physical sources, independent headphone or guest mixes, hardware controls, multichannel routing or operation that is less dependent on one application.
A product name does not prove loopback or mix-minus, and two headphone sockets do not prove two independently routable mixes. Match the required buses and outputs to the exact routing diagram.
Eight decision factors
Check these in order. Mic inputs and Gain/phantom decide whether the route works; the remaining factors refine operation and convenience.
- Mic inputs: Count simultaneous XLR voices and other analog sources.
- Gain/phantom: Match each microphone’s requirement to the published preamp and phantom-power behavior.
- Headphone mixes: Count listeners and whether they need separate source balances.
- Loopback: Define which computer audio needs to return into the recording/stream.
- Mix-minus: Define each remote guest send and exclude that guest’s return.
- Computer links: Check single or dual USB roles and which host owns each route.
- Physical control: Decide which mute, level and scene actions must be reachable without software.
- Video role: A device such as Streamer X or ATEM Mini Pro may also own capture/switching, with separate video ceilings.
Constraints that change the answer
Start with One-channel interfaces. The conditions below can change the choice or the next troubleshooting branch.
- One-channel interfaces: Wave XLR MK.2 is a one-microphone route; it cannot become two XLR inputs.
- Dual USB roles: Wave XLR Pro host and auxiliary USB links have different speed and routing roles.
- Loopback versus mix-minus: Returning computer audio is not the same as building a guest-safe send.
- HD workflow: ATEM Mini Pro switches an HD production path; do not assume 4K capture.
- Software dependency: Verify routing software and OS support before buying for a specific bus layout.
A practical connection and configuration workflow
Follow the steps in order. Confirm the hardware in the operating system before selecting it in OBS or another routing application, and change one cable, mode or route at a time.
- Step 1: Draw sources and destinations as a matrix.
- Step 2: Count physical inputs and outputs.
- Step 3: Mark required independent mixes and exclusions.
- Step 4: Eliminate products missing a hard route before comparing controls.
- Step 5: Connect and test one microphone, monitoring, computer return and guest send at a time.
Before you buy
List every microphone, computer return, monitor feed and remote-call send in the setup builder. Choose the smaller device whose documented routing supplies those paths together.
- Exact maker, model, generation and product label.
- Host operating system, application and physical port used.
- Required signal mode and each sending/receiving endpoint.
- Included and separately required cables, power and mounts.
- Known limitation, unresolved fact and the test that will resolve it.
Examples
A solo XLR creator may need only Wave XLR MK.2 and software routing. Paying for a mixer does not improve a route that has one voice, one headphone mix and no guests.
A two-host podcast with remote guests may benefit from RØDECaster Duo or another device with the required inputs and independent routes. Verify the exact send/return configuration rather than assuming the mixer label supplies it.

Four common failure modes
Match the symptom below first, then change one variable at a time and make a short local recording before changing the destination.
- Second mic cannot connect: The interface lacks a second independent input; use a proper multi-input path.
- Guest echo: The guest return is present in the send; remove it from that destination.
- Loopback missing in OBS: Enable the exact software/hardware loopback source and select it once.
- Headphones hear wrong mix: Identify which output owns each socket and assign the intended sources.
Prove the result
Connect every required input and output, then prove the creator monitor, program mix and any remote-call send at the same time.
Mute or lower each source in turn and confirm only the intended destinations change. A device is a fit only when its documented routing covers the complete session without an improvised software detour.
